Komori UK ESP foresees bright future with UK’s first Komori eight-colour perfector
(17/10/2000)
Swindon-based ESP Colour has rounded off a £3 million investment programme with an order for the UK’s first eight-colour Komori Lithrone 40P perfector.
A six-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 perfector is making way for the new press, which will come on stream in November. "The Lithrone will do everything the Heidelberg does, and more," says ESP’s sales director Chris Tester. "It gives us more capacity, improved efficiency and, very importantly, opens new business opportunities particularly on four-back-four work."
He adds that Komori won the order – signed at last week’s highly successful Komori Open House in Swindon – after a two-way contest with Heidelberg and visits to other Lithrone 840P installations in Europe. "We received good reports from other users, especially Valbor in Strasbourg.
"We like to think that we know the perfecting business inside out, and Komori has an excellent solution. The 840P will make us more competitive on a variety of work and a range of runs, from a few thousand up to one million.
"The press’s performance on large solids is very good, while from an efficiency point of view, the automated makeready systems are excellent. We particularly like the KMS press management system, which monitors the press performance constantly and identifies any problems quickly."
The investment comes at the end of a year in which ESP’s sales have almost doubled to an anticipated £9.8 million, with around £12 million being predicted for next year. Over the same period, the company has also invested in a Creo CTP system and new MBO folders.
ESP Colour grew out of Swindon Press, which adopted the name a year ago after buying Slough printer SLS from administrators. Around 30 per cent of work comes from catalogues and directories, with most of the balance made up of magazines, brochures and marketing collateral.
E-business is future business model
ESP is currently putting in place the infrastructure for e-business operations. "It’s a key part of our future strategy," Chris explains. "We can currently handle quotations, but this is just scratching the surface. In time, we plan to provide details of stock levels, proof of delivery, job status and more over the internet."
