IPEX 2002
IPEX 2002 careers event to address skills shortage
(25/09/2001)

In support of the Government’s efforts to address the skills shortage affecting the industry, Picon and IIR Exhibitions have launched a two-day careers event at IPEX 2002. Vision: the careers event for print, publishing and media will run alongside IPEX 2002 on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 April 2002.

Comprising a stand-alone dedicated exhibition and seminar programme, Vision is designed to introduce the many exciting opportunities in the industry to students looking at their career options. It will also offer recruitment opportunities and training solutions to those already in the industry, but who want to move up the career ladder or acquire new skills.

“Like many organisations and businesses, we are increasingly concerned at the lack of fresh, young talent coming into the industry“, comments Picon Chief Executive John Brazier. “As owners of IPEX we realised that, as well as being the UK’s premier business event, IPEX is the ideal opportunity to present our dynamic and diverse industry to young people.”

The Vision exhibition will be staged in the Concourse Suite in the Atrium area of the National Exhibition Centre. It will bring together employers, training and education providers, professional bodies and careers experts, to demonstrate the broad range of opportunities across the industry to both students wishing to enter the field and existing employees planning to further their careers. Visitors will be able to meet the major employers, find out more about training and educational opportunities and take advantage of the professional guidance that will be on hand.

The Vision seminar programme will feature high profile speakers from print, publishing, graphic design and production. The speakers will present “their stories”, demonstrating that the field is no longer manual and male dominated, but a fast moving, service-led industry with cutting edge technology and a need for the right skills. These free seminars will be scheduled to run at regular intervals throughout the event.

The IPEX 2002 marketing team has enlisted the help and support of CMP Information Ltd, publishers of Printing World magazine and the DotPrint website. As the key media partner for the Vision event, Printing World’s editorial team has acted as consultants, been actively involved in finding young, dynamic speakers, as well as helping to prepare some trendy collateral to promote the event to schools and colleges.

In addition, Printing 2002, the next issue of CMP Information’s comprehensive guide to the industry for careers advisors and students, will be published to coincide with the IPEX 2002 exhibition. Each student that attends the event will receive a free copy of this invaluable guide.

“Part of the Eurographic Press, Printing World has consistently raised the issue of skills shortages and the need to promote the industry in a way that will attract young talented individuals through the pages of it’s editorial”, comments Caroline Eden. “They have excellent contacts with associations, training establishments, schools and colleges and, when we developed the Vision event, we immediately asked for their help.”

Vision also has the support of Polestar and the BPIF.

IIR Exhibitions has also been in touch with all UK schools, as well as further education establishments that run graphics and print related courses to solicit their views on the event. The feedback to date has been phenomenal.

“Our research has revealed how few opportunities there are for lecturers and teachers to show their students the industry in action and over 1500 students have already registered to attend”, comments Caroline Eden, Managing Director of IIR Exhibitions.

“IPEX 2002 presents the best opportunity in the next few years for everyone, including students and young people, to see everything from content creation to final output and learn what a diverse and technologically advanced industry this is. Our exhibitors invest a lot of time and money in exhibiting at the show and we didn’t feel we could simply open the doors to all. Therefore, we have created the Vision event to enable students to see what the industry has to offer in a controlled and informative way.”

More information about participating in Vision or attending the event can be obtained on a dedicated website www.visioncareers.co.uk.
