BPIF (British Printing Industries Federation) BPIF Climate Change Levy (CCL) rebate scheme saves print industry £3.6 million
(11/04/2003)
Many of the UK’s top printing companies have contributed to British industry cutting carbon dioxide release in the atmosphere by a massive 13.5 million tonnes last year. In addition the BPIF administered CCL rebate scheme has saved participating print companies £3.6 million of energy taxes in 2002 alone.
Commenting on the announcement in a press statement released on 7 April 2003, Lord Whitty, the Sustainable Energy Minister, said: “This is good news for business, and good news for the environment. Industry has shown that it is prepared to play its part in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The results of our agreements demonstrate real gains in energy efficiency, achieved in a cost-effective way.”
The printing industry itself has seen an improvement in specific energy consumption of 4% since 1999. With production increasing by 3% over the same period this has led to an equivalent saving of 18,000 tonnes of CO2. 96% of printing companies covered by the agreement had their schemes renewed compared to only 88% across the whole Climate Change Agreement scheme nationally.
More and more printing companies are joining the scheme, which numbered 130 sites at the last count. The scheme requires them to improve their energy efficiency by, on average, 12% over an eleven year period. In return for this they receive a discount of up to 80% off their Climate Change Levy bills.
Steve Walker who runs the scheme for the BPIF said, “ It was gratifying that after all the hard work put in by both the participant companies and the BPIF, nearly all those who started on the scheme since April 2001 have reached their first milestone target and have been re-certified for the next two year period. This will enable them to save a further £7.5 million in return for a 2% improvement in energy efficiency.
“If your climate change levy on printing equipment is more than £5,000 per annum, this scheme will probably save you money. The levy is currently £0.0043 on kWh electricity, £0.0015 per kWh of gas, which is an additional tax of between 10-15% on energy. Although we do not support any additional burden on business, this scheme has demonstrated that there is real room for improvement in energy consumption. This not only reduces a company’s tax bill but also can drive production efficiencies reducing operating costs in the long term, and promoting competitiveness,” continues Mr Walker.
The BPIF not only administers the scheme but, with the help of its partner Business Eco Network, also provides assistance on how to reach the energy efficiency targets.
