Best in Digital Printing Highlighted by Xeikon's Diamond Awards

Mortsel, Belgium, 30 June 1997: Xeikon N.V., developer and manufacturer of high-quality digital colour presses, announced the five winners of the second international Xeikon Diamond Awards at Imprinta 97 in Düsseldorf. The Xeikon Diamond Awards provides an annual showcase for the most creative, innovative and successful work being produced on Xeikon Digital Color Presses throughout the world. Winners were selected by an international panel of independent judges made up of experts from creative agencies, consultancies and the printing and publishing industry.

Phil Eaves, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Xeikon, spoke at the presentation of the awards: 'This year1s Diamond Awards entries proved to us that our customers are amongst the most creative and innovative printers in the world. The judges were presented with many examples of high-quality work which could not have been done without a Xeikon press. We congratulate the winners for providing such a rich source of inspiration for the new opportunities offered by Xeikon technology to everyone involved in the creation, production and use of printed communications.'

The 1997 Xeikon Diamond Awards winners were:

For overall best promotional idea using digital printing:
a:prico, Hamburg, Germany, for an in-house direct marketing project. A fully personalised brandy bottle, gift box and shipping container with labels and packaging digitally printed with recipient1s details from a database of 285 clients, suppliers and editors. a:prico achieved a blind blocking / blind stamping effect, using different black densities on the bottle label and black in 100% CMYK on the gift box, only possible with a Xeikon press.

For best use of variable data, personalisation or customisation:
PD Printing Direct, Vancouver, Canada, for an on-line print ordering service for real estate agencies. Customers from all over North America can select from an extensive package of stationery and brochure layouts, compose and edit text and image data to be printed and send their complete order via modem link direct to the Xeikon PrintStreamer. The jobs are automatically processed and queued for production on the Xeikon press. PD Print Direct currently handles 50 orders per day with targets to process 1,000 orders per day in 12 months.

For achievements in developing new markets and applications:
Lamplight Colour, London, UK, winning their second consecutive Diamond Award, for a 'twist and lock' dispenser used in promotion of films on video. Produced for film & video production company, Foresight, on 160 gsm uncoated Neusiedler Color Copy stock, the full colour print run of 200 could only be achieved economically using digital printing.

For best use of unique features of the Xeikon press:
a:prico, for four 30m long promotional banners for publishing house, Gruner + Jahr AG & Co, to celebrate the 20th birthday of the magazine, GEO. The banners each featured 240 covers of the magazine printed on PET foil and was used to decorate the venue of the celebration party. As the banners were printed 2-up, roll to roll, a special set-up of the cutter and stacker enabled the banners to be slit on line.

For best use of digital printing in existing applications:
AAA - AG für Digital Printing, Zurich, Switzerland, for the 1996 Annual Report for Asea Brown Boveri Schweiz produced to very tight deadlines. The pre-edition print run of 19 copies was completed in half a day.

Each winner was presented with a Flanders Brilliant-cut diamond which was produced in Antwerp, the leading diamond trading centre in the world and the location of Xeikon's headquarters.Best in Digital Printing highlighted by Xeikon's Diamond Awards
