IGP (UK) Ltd
Birmingham Post and Mail orders eight IGP processors
(16/05/1997)

The Birmingham Post and Mail has placed an order with IGP to supply eight Laserline 28 film processors plus IGP's silver recovery equipment as part of a major revamp of its pre-press facilities totalling £400,000 this year alone. The investment includes new front-ends, imagesetters, rips and servers, as well as building additional rooms to house the equipment.

"We've used IGP processors for around ten years and have always had very good service," says engineering manager Graham Smith. "The current investment is a move to become completely film oriented in our pre-press department and by August we should have eliminated all bromide production. With some 7,000 plates produced every week we need to be as efficient as possible in this department and the facilities we are putting in will help the flow of work enormously, allowing us to produce film and plates more quickly.

"It will also help in handling the increasing amount of colour work printed in our newspapers, the Birmingham Post and the Birmingham Mail being the main titles, although there are around 40 publications in total. This means that the pre-press department is running 24 hours a day and we must have equipment that is one hundred percent reliable. For this reason, we have taken out IGP's Gold Star preventative maintenance contract which ensures that we can work around the clock without fear of disruption, at least from the processing equipment."

The Birmingham Post and Mail's order also includes IGP's chemical mixing systems, which will be linked to the processors individually so that each Laserline 28 can operate independently. The systems will ensure that the correct concentration of developer and fixer is used at all times, while the silver recovery units mean that the waste will have sufficient harmful elements removed from the used solutions to be safely put down the drain.
